WHY WE NEED HIRAC?

HIRARC is a compound word which is made up of three consecutive activities running one after the other. The activities consist of Hazard Identification, Risk Assessment and Risk Control training. Hazard identification is the recognizing of things which may cause injury or harm to a person. Risk assessment is the looking at the possibility of injury or harm occur to a person is exposed to a hazard. The introduction of measures which will eliminate or reduce the risk of a person being exposed to a hazard is known as Risk control.

Every employee is exposed to hazards at work. However not many are aware of the threats posed by these hazards that could harm and endanger life. Reducing risk in the workplace is paramount, both to an organization and its employees. HIRAC are the starting point whereby potential harm or danger is uncovered, and its magnitude and risk analyzed so that the appropriate controls can be taken. It provides the surety of compliance to legal, as well as management system requirements.

Further to that, as required by the law, each organization needs to have the safe system of work to ensure harm is prevented to all employees including visitors and contractors. It is therefore important for organizations to conduct HIRARC. The organizations that have carried out HIRARC reported the positive change and reduced the risks.
